Forest Schools at St Giles

One of St Giles key focusses is Outdoor Learning. We believe outdoor learning has numerous benefits and positively feeds back into the classroom environment!

Therefore....

Forest School has been running since September 2017 with a qualified Forest School practitioner, it is a fantastic way of supporting emotional and physical development. We want to encourage and inspire our pupils through exposing them to fun and creative outdoor experiences. Children will have the opportunity to learn about the natural environment, managing risk, problem solve and use their initiative and imagination!

Forest Schools will be delivered in the woodland area at the Frank Whittle site. We follow our own SPICES curriculum where we focus on the holistic development of a child:

- Social development

- Physical development

- Intellectual development

- Communication development

- Emotional development

- Spiritual awareness

Some of the activities include: Building homes/dens, mini beast hunts, exploring/experimenting with different materials and investigating natural environment (and many more!).

Outdoor Learning

'The best classroom and the richest cupboard is roofed only by the sky' Margaret McMillan.

At St Giles we believe it is important for all children to have the opportunity to access and enjoy the benefits of outdoor learning. Our children can explore the world outside the classroom in a safe and stimulating environment with a variety of unique spaces. We understand and promote that experiencing these spaces is an essential part of learning and social development.

What's New?

Toyota Project

We are extremely grateful for the hard work, effort and generosity of Toyota and their project to improve and develop different areas on our school grounds. They worked in and developed spaces such as Maddy's garden and our top garden. See photos for the wonderful work they did.

Site Developments

We are excited to announce major site improvements across both sites to develop our outdoor learning provision. In Summer 2024 we have had the following completed:
  • A huge transformation to the EYFS outdoor area

  • Installation of a new outdoor play area

  • Installation of a new outdoor classroom

  • New canopies covering outdoor classroom spaces in a few classes

The children absolutely love our new spaces and all improvements are having a significant impact on the children's learning through outdoor play and teaching and learning inputs.

Thank You!

St Giles would like to say thank you to those who have supported us in our journey to creating our outdoor learning experience.
